Announcing Project Revolution
A few months ago, I wrote a short story. “Left Coast Karma” was fun, but it left a bunch of questions unanswered—and the more I thought about it, I realized I wanted to know the answers. So I started writing a novel to go with it.
Problem: I’ve cranked out two whole short stories in the last twelve months. Would any of you stick around long enough for me to finish a whole novel? Yeah, right. I thought about serializing the whole thing, but decided against it. With serials, all the people that want to join up in the middle have to go back and catch up from the beginning. Everybody knows someone who says they want to watch, say, Lost, but don’t want to commit to all the backstory. And—let’s face it—I really want to write a novel. Who doesn’t?
Solution: Project Revolution. Do both. Work on the novel and put out related stories along the way. Teasers, if you will. Spinoffs. Companions that go along with the novel and add to the experience. Complete arcs in themselves, without all the loose ends tied up. Read “Left Coast Karma”—Project Revolution #1—and you’ll see what I mean.
Now, with 10,000 or so words done on the novel and a short break from writing 3000-word TVgasm recaps, the time has come to release the second story. Project Revolution #2.
You’ll find it right here Monday, December 21. Just in time for Christmas!

Good idea. I’m all for throwing out pre-conceived notions about how stories should packaged and delivered. The truth is that reading habits are changing so completely that we have no idea what the forms will be, even in the near future. I like the idea of releasing vignettes on the way to a novel.
